Plate, Royal Arms Of Saxony, Holland Around 1830, Silver
🇬🇧Extremely rare Empire style dinner plate from the silver tableware of Duke Karl Bernhard von Sachsen Weimar Eisenach (1792-1862), second son of the reigning Grand Duke of Saxony-Weimar and military's commander with an incredible career.
Very young and ambitious, he participated at the age of 14 in the Battle of Jena under Prussian command.
Then his father rallied around his cousin, the King of Saxony, who joined the Confederation of the Rhine to support the Napoleonic cause.
Because of this alliance, the young Carl Bernhard will fight in Wagram against the Austrians under the command of Bernadotte.
Following the marriage of his older brother to the Tsar's daughter, he will not participate in the French military campaign against Russia.
In 1815, we find him in the army of the Prince of Orange, future King of Holland, where he will play an important role in the defeat of the Emperor Napoléon I .
Having become William I of the Netherlands, his brother in arms will appoint him military governor of East Flanders with residence in Ghent, the city where this plate was made. It was undoubtedly part of an important silver tableware of its house because it is engraved with a number 41.
The General Duke of Saxony will then play a very important role. in the military campaign of 1831 which could very well have reconquered the rebel Belgian provinces. But after the reconquest of several Flemish towns, he had to comply with the armistice concluded by the King of Holland under the threat of the arrival of 70,000 French soldiers promised by King Louis-Philippe to his future son-in-law King Leopold I of Belgians. Carl Bernhard will end his military career in the Dutch Indian colonies. The plate is simply decorated with a small border with a discreet motif typical for its time and is engraved with the coat of arms of the Saxony family under the royal crown and hallmarked for Holland. It weighs 525 grams.

Devenu Guillaume I de Pays-Bas, son frère d'armes le nommera gouverneur militaire de la Flandre Orientale avec résidence à Gand, ville où a été fabriquée cette assiette. Elle fit sans aucun doute partie d'une importante vaisselle d'argent pour sa résidence car elle est gravée du numéro 41.
Le Général Duc de Saxe jouera ensuite un rôle important dans la campagne militaire de 1831 mais après la reconquête de plusieurs villes flamandes, il dut se plier à l'armistice conclue par le roi de Hollande sous la menace de l'arrivée de 70000 soldats français promis par le roi Louis-Philippe à son futur gendre le roi Léopold I des Belges.
Carl Bernhard finira sa carrière militaire dans les colonies indiennes hollandaises.
L'assiette est poinçonné de la garantie pour le royaume des Pays-Bas. Elle est simplement décorée d'un petit bord avec un motif discret typique pour son époque et est gravée du blason de la famille de Saxe sommé de la couronne royale.
