🇬🇧Splendid Louis XVI period coffee maker. Hallmarks of the city of Ath, of the county of Hainaut, of the vintage 1779 and of the master silversmith Jean Louis Philippront, who is undoubtedly the most important Athois silversmith of the second half of the eighteenth century. Unlike most of his colleagues who struggle to survive thanks to the manufacture of "minutiae" (shoe buckles and small boxes and snuffboxes), JLPhilippront produces sumptuous goldsmiths of very high quality.
He began his career in 1752 and worked until the mid-1780s. His Louis XV style works were very successful. But it was when he began to create Louis XVI style objects that he showed real virtuosity and sometimes even a touch of humor. He made a coffee maker with a pouring spout in the shape of a huge tubular brick chimney like there was everywhere in Hainaut at the start of the industrial revolution.
We find in this coffee maker, an abundance of decorations "Back to the antique" as well as an immense delicacy of execution. Extremely rare, it has retained its magnificent original handle which is carved with patterns resuming those of the coffee maker.

🇫🇷 Splendide cafetière d'époque Louis XVI. Poinçons de la ville d'Ath, du comté du Hainaut, du millésime 1779 et du maître orfèvre Jean Louis Philippront, qui est sans aucun doute le plus important orfèvre athois de la deuxième moitié du dix-huitième siècle. Contrairement à la plupart de ses confrères qui peinent à survivre grâce à la fabrication de "minuties "(des boucles de chaussures et petites boîtes et tabatières), J.L.Philippront réalise de somptueuses orfèvreries de très grande qualité .
Il commence sa carrière en 1752 et travaillera jusqu'au milieu des années 1780. Ses œuvres de style Louis XV sont très réussies. Mais c'est au moment où il commence à créer des objets de style Louis XVI qu'il fait preuve d'une véritable virtuosité et parfois même d'une pointe d'humour. Il a réalisé une cafetière avec un bec verseur en forme d'une immense cheminée tubulaire en brique comme il y en eût partout dans le Hainaut au début de là révolution industrielle.
Nous retrouvons dans cette cafetière-ci, une abondance de décors "Retour à l'antique " ainsi qu'une immense finesse d'exécution. Fait rarissime, elle a conservé son magnifique manche d'origine qui est sculpté de motifs reprenant ceux de la cafetière.
